KANK or KANKED?

August 12, 2006

I have not seen KANK, and will probably watch a DVD version of the movie. The movie appears to have opened to lukewarm response from the audience. User reviews have not been enthusiastic. However, NYTimes appears to have given it a sort of thumbs-up. Here is what Neil Genzlinger wrote in his review of the film in NY Times:

“…the film is surprisingly engaging, thanks largely to its watchable actors…The movie’s humor is deft enough to make you wonder why Mr. Johar’s cinematic eyes seems stuck in the land of Playboy videos, shampoo commercials and early MTV.”

Let us cut to the actual audience and their reviews. Here is what Beth Loves Bollywood  says, “the one person I’ve talked to who has seen KANK dozed off in the theater. On opening night. In Mumbai. Which makes me far less interested in driving to Chicago next weekend to see it.”

Neha Vish saw the movie and wonders why the movie was ever made? She writes, “It’s so BORING. So slow. So annoying.”

Velu Nair saw KANK and writes that some films do not warrant any discussion and KANK falls in that category. You have to read his review to find out how he arrived at that conclusion.

Oh, by the way, Beth used the word “kanked” quite a bit, and I believe one of her friends suggested that the meaning of “kanked” should be “worn-out” or “irritated.” It sure does appear that viewers of the film were kanked!

Are you also kanked? Write, and let me know.

UPDATE:

Hiren sent in his review of KANK, and here is the link to his review.

Suyog sent in his review of KANK, and here are the links to review one and review two.

Sweta Mogra sent in her review of KANK, and she was kanked! You can read her review here.

Anita Bora sent in her review of the movie. She could not get tickets for the first day, but nonetheless she did end up watching the movie. Read her review to find out what she had to say…she liked it. I think she was mesmerized by the jewellry that Ms. Rani wore.

Maria of Filmholic has a review of KANK. She saw the movie out here in the NY area, and she kinda liked the fillum. So, that is one more good review for KANK.

Thank god the film is finally done was the thought that went through Priti Shetty when she saw KANK. You can read her review to find out what else she has to say about the movie. I guess no more Hindi movies for Priti for the rest of the year…they have used up their film quota!

Aseem Chhabra’s review of KANK in Rediff is written from a New Yorker’s perspective. He captures the local flavor and the expectations…you have to read the review to find out what else he has to say.

Aymore folks out there with reviews of KANK? Send me your links….

In my view, the movie was good overall but did not seem authentic enough. There was an overdose of melodrama and the root cause of marital relationships were not fully explored.

Maybe you would like to see my review. It draws parellels between Salaam Namaste and Osho. At least I am trying to be different in reviews.

here’s mine - why karan named his movie kank!!

  • 6. jaz  |  August 15, 2006 at 11:28 am

KANK - For once Karan has tackled a subject matter which the indain audence are not used to. I think he done a good job , the story moves fast and keep you interested. I also had my reservation but can say I enjoyed the film!!

As far as the acting is concerned, i believe that all the artists have done a great job! However, a good movie is not just about acting, it is one that conveys a message to the viewers and to the society by large. Unfortunately, KANK has failed completely as it approves 1. adultery, 2. divorce which are two major sins tearing apart thousands of families in the world.

Thanks Prithi for sending your review…great one.

MadMan thanks for catching that incorrect link and letting me know. Appreciate it.

Rajiv that is a great point that you make that the movie communicated its message.

Thanks all for reading and sharing.

Did anybody notice SRK’s index finger which is badly stained..(ugh) get a manicure already and his really bad teeth. You would think he can afford a dentist.

  • 15. Kamla  |  August 19, 2006 at 3:22 am

Is the index finer stained due to nicotine? Or, did the finger nail have a jagged edge? :-)

I am sure he is headed to the dentist next :-)

I will remember to watch him like a hawk whenver I get to see the film.

    Thanks for reading.

The only thing good about KANK is the Dhoom- II trailer.

Nins: I have not seen the film as yet, but watched D:2 trailer on a videosharing service.

I did not like KANK. I agree that its a very realistic movie but this movie has changed the very base of marriage. Rani was loved so much by abhishek then y she had to turn to shahrukh?? well shahrukh’s life wasn’t good that’s understood. But rather than saving his married life he went and had an affair with someone else. This is a very western approach. Karan johar should have tried to bring those two family together rather than destroying both the houses.

I expected a this to be very much like K3g and kal ho naa ho. I hope the next movie is like them.

my opinion is that the songs and the costumes in the movie were really good but the story line was really disgusting.
i felt that it was the bollywood’s worst movie i have ever seen.
the movie was not at all indianised apt for western culture.
that’s why it broke all records in US and etc.
hope that karan johar’s next movie will be good and descent like k3g and khnh.
